Powering Sustainability: Off-Grid Solar Setup for a Buckinghamshire Organic Farm

At Off-Grid Installer, every project brings its own unique landscape and challenges, but our recent trip to Buckinghamshire was particularly special. We were tasked with bringing reliable, off-grid power to a brand-new organic farm and smallholding nestled in the countryside.

When establishing a remote agricultural setup from scratch, getting reliable electricity is often one of the biggest hurdles. The goal for this site was to build a robust power hub capable of running current operations—including powering a live-in caravan—while laying the groundwork for a future container home build.

Setting Up the Central Power Hub

The heart of this system needed a dedicated, weather-protected home. The farm owner had just finished erecting a sturdy metal shed on-site, which served as the perfect base for the central control station.

To ensure long-term durability and efficiency, we built a pre-configured power board setup housed within a custom wooden enclosure. This houses the system’s core components:

• Victron Energy Inverter/Charger & MPPT Controllers: Providing efficient power conversion and solar charge management.
• Insulated Battery Storage: Safely enclosed within the lower wooden cabinet to protect the system’s storage capacity against cold temperatures.
• Integrated Cabling & Protection: Cleanly wired auto start-stop control cables and generator connections.

Moving heavy equipment across soft farm ground is never easy, but thanks to local farmer George and his trusty telehandler, we maneuvered the pre-built power station straight into position inside the shed with precision.

Harnessing the Sun: 3.6kW Solar Array

To generate maximum solar yield on a site with varying terrain, we utilized a unique natural feature of the property: an elevated old railway track embankment.

By placing the solar array on high ground above the main shed area, the panels get clear, unshaded access to sunlight throughout the day.

• Solar Capacity: 8 x 460W high-efficiency panels (yielding 3.68kW total solar input).
• Transmission: Heavy-duty armored cable runs down the embankment into an external junction box at the shed to feed direct energy straight to the power hub.

Failsafe Power with Automated Generator Backup

While solar does the heavy lifting, an off-grid farm in the UK requires a dependable backup during dark winter months or peak heavy-equipment usage.

We integrated a Hyundai Long-Run Diesel Generator situated near the shed. The system is wired directly for auto start-stop functionality. If the battery bank drops below a set threshold, the control station automatically signals the generator to kick in, recharge the batteries, and shut down smoothly once power levels are restored—ensuring the farm never runs dark.

Looking Ahead

This Buckinghamshire project is a prime example of how off-grid solar can transform raw land into a functional, self-sustaining operation. With power established for the shed, site tools, and caravan living, the site is officially ready for the next phase of its organic farm build.
